Lost Lands is Ohio in September, not the desert. This is the single most important thing to understand when packing. Legend Valley is a green outdoor venue in rural Ohio. September weather here means warm to hot humid days, cool to cold nights, and a real chance of rain. Pack completely differently from a desert festival like Bass Canyon or Beyond Wonderland.
Rain and Mud Gear
This section is not optional. September in Ohio brings rain and when rain hits Legend Valley the campground becomes muddy. Veterans of Lost Lands consistently say rain gear is the most important thing people forget to bring.
Rain and Mud
- Rain jacket or poncho: A packable rain jacket you can stuff in your bag while inside the venue. Non-negotiable. A disposable poncho works in a pinch but a real rain jacket performs better over three days.
- Rain boots or waterproof shoes: If the campground gets muddy your regular sneakers will be destroyed. Muck boots or rubber rain boots are the veteran move. At minimum bring waterproof shoes.
- Extra shoes: Bring a backup pair. If your primary shoes get soaked you want dry footwear for the next day.
- Waterproof tent with a full rain fly: A tent without a proper rain fly will soak through. Verify your tent is genuinely waterproof before you go.
- Tarp: Under your tent and one extra for creating covered shade space at camp if it is raining.
- Waterproof bags or dry bags: For your electronics, documents, and anything that cannot get wet inside your tent.
- Extra trash bags: For wet gear, muddy shoes, and keeping things separated in your car on the way out.
Warmth and Layers
September nights at Legend Valley drop to the low 50s or even high 40s Fahrenheit. After hours of dancing and sweating you will feel the cold the moment you stop moving. Late night sets at Lost Lands require layers.
Warmth
- Hoodie or fleece jacket: Essential for every night. Bring one you do not mind getting sweaty and muddy.
- Light jacket or windbreaker: Layering gives you flexibility as temperatures shift through the night.
- Long pants: At least one pair for cooler nights and for protecting your legs from bugs in camp.
- Warm socks: Your feet get cold faster than the rest of you. Bring extra pairs.
- Sleeping bag rated to 40°F: September nights in rural Ohio can be cold. A summer bag will not be enough on the coldest nights.
- Blanket: Extra warmth in the tent and for wrapping up at camp between sets.
Bug Protection
Legend Valley is a rural outdoor venue in Ohio. Bugs are a genuine issue that first-timers consistently underestimate. Bug spray is allowed in the campgrounds.
Bugs
- DEET bug spray: Bring multiple cans. Apply before going into camp areas especially at dusk and dawn. Bug spray in aerosol cans is allowed in the campgrounds at Lost Lands unlike some other festivals.
- Long sleeves and pants for camp: Covering up is the most effective bug prevention especially in the evening.
- Tent with mesh screen panels: Keep your tent zipped at all times when not entering or exiting.
- After Bite or similar treatment: For the bites you will inevitably get despite your best efforts.
Camping Essentials
Legend Valley is a traditional outdoor camping venue. Unlike The Gorge which has desert wind as the primary challenge, Lost Lands presents humidity, potential mud, and bugs as the main campground considerations.
Camp Setup
- Canopy with sides or walls: Provides shade during hot humid afternoons and shelter if it rains. Standard logo-wrapped canopy tents are not allowed. Plain canopies are fine.
- Tent stakes and a mallet: Ohio ground can be hard when dry and loose when wet. Bring quality stakes and a mallet to drive them.
- Camp chairs: Essential for the campground. Verify the current chair policy inside the venue at lostlandsfestival.com before bringing them in.
- Battery powered fan: Humidity at night makes sleeping uncomfortable without airflow.
- Eye mask and earplugs for sleeping: Sound carries across the campground late into the night.
- Headlamp: Hands free at night. Bring spare batteries.
- Solar powered string lights or a light up flag: Helps you find your campsite in the dark.
- Wheeled cart or wagon: For hauling gear from your car to your campsite. The walk can be significant.
- Zip ties and duct tape: Something always needs fixing.
- Extra trash bags: Leave No Trace. Multiple bags for sorting waste.
- Portable speaker: For camp vibes between sets. Keep volume respectful during quiet hours.
- Small propane camp stove: Allowed in the campgrounds. Full size propane grills and charcoal fires are not. Cook your own meals to save money.
Food and Water
Hydration and Food
- Hydration pack or CamelBak: Empty CamelBaks are allowed inside the venue. Free water refill stations are available throughout. Fill up before entering.
- Reusable water bottle: Empty bottles allowed inside the venue. Frozen water bottles are not allowed.
- Electrolytes: Important even in humid conditions where you sweat more than you realize.
- Cooler with ice: Stock it with meals and snacks. Lost Lands allows outside food in the campground which saves significant money over three days.
- Airtight food containers: Protect food from humidity and bugs.
- Utensils, plates, and a can opener.
- Late night camp snacks: After the last set there is nothing better than food at camp.
Venue Essentials
For the Venue
- High Fidelity Earplugs: Already included with your ticket in a branded metal case. Bring the backup pair anyway. Lost Lands has some of the loudest sound systems at any US festival.
- Portable charger minimum 10,000 mAh: Three long days with heavy phone use. Charge it every night at camp.
- Valid photo ID: 18+ for entry. 21+ for alcohol. No expired IDs.
- Cash: Some vendors prefer it. Have some on hand.
- Lost Lands app: Download and set up before you leave home. Cell service at Legend Valley can be inconsistent. Download the festival map and schedule while you have strong signal.
- Empty CamelBak or hydration pack: Allowed inside the venue. Fill at free water stations.
- Comfortable shoes you can dance in even if wet: This is critical at Lost Lands. Your shoes will likely get muddy or wet at some point. Wear shoes you are prepared to destroy.
- Light layer for late sets: It gets cold after midnight.
- Kandi bracelets: PLUR culture is strong at Lost Lands. Bring extras to trade.
Hygiene and Health
Stay Fresh
- Wet wipes: Multiple packs. Essential between shower opportunities especially after muddy days.
- Biodegradable soap and shampoo: Showers are available at Lost Lands for a small fee. Free for VIP admission holders.
- Towel: Quick dry towel is ideal.
- Flip flops: For shower use.
- Extra socks: More than you think. Change them daily. Wet socks are miserable over multiple days.
- Sunscreen: Ohio September days can still be hot and sunny. Aerosol sunscreen is allowed in the campgrounds at Lost Lands.
- Deodorant: Apply daily in the humidity.
- Lip balm: Humidity does not mean your lips stay moisturized. Bring it anyway.
- Pain reliever and basic first aid: Ibuprofen, bandages, blister pads.
- Any personal medications: In original packaging with your ID for security.
- Hand sanitizer: For use between handwashing opportunities at portapotties.
