Before you pack, it helps to know the bag rules. The official Louder Than Life site strongly discourages bringing bags of any kind. No large bags, backpacks, duffle bags, or CamelBaks are permitted. Going in with a small fanny pack or going bagless gets you through security fastest and eliminates any issues at the gate. Source: official Louder Than Life info page.

What to Pack
Louder Than Life has strict bag rules and no re-entry for most GA tickets. Everything you need for the full day has to come in with you on the first entry. Pack light, stay within the rules, and don't count on running back to your car or hotel mid-day if you forget something.
The Essentials
- Small fanny pack or go bagless: The official site discourages bags. No large bags, backpacks, or duffle bags are permitted. A small fanny pack worn in front of your body is the most practical option and the easiest thing through security.
- One factory-sealed water bottle (20 oz max) or one empty plastic refillable bottle: No Hydroflasks, Yetis, or any metal containers. Refill stations are available inside the venue.
- Non-aerosol sunscreen: No aerosol cans permitted. September in Louisville still means real daytime sun exposure. Pack a travel size non-aerosol bottle and reapply during the day.
- High fidelity earplugs: It's four days of metal at high volume. Earplugs let you hear the music clearly while protecting your hearing across the full weekend. Bring a backup pair. They're small, inexpensive, and easy to stash in a pocket.
- Small portable charger: A full day of the app, photos, and group messaging drains a phone. Keep it small enough to fit your fanny pack or pocket.
- ID: Required for alcohol purchases. Required at entry if your ticket is age verified.
- Cash: On-site parking accepts cash or card. Some vendors may prefer cash. An ATM inside a festival typically charges a fee.
Weather and Comfort
- Compact poncho: Louder Than Life runs rain or shine. A poncho that fits in a pocket or small bag is ideal since you can't leave and come back if the weather turns. September in Louisville can bring fast-moving rain.
- Light layer for the evening: September nights in Louisville cool off noticeably compared to the afternoon. A light hoodie or long sleeve you can tie around your waist gives you options for the late headliner sets without adding bulk during the day.
- Hat and sunglasses: Both are on the official allowed list. Useful during the afternoon sets when you are standing in open areas without shade.
- Comfortable broken-in shoes: Seven stages across a large venue means a lot of walking across four days. Do not break in new shoes at a multi-day festival.
What to Leave at the Hotel
- Backpacks, duffle bags, or any large bag
- CamelBak or hydration pack
- Hydroflask, Yeti, or any metal water bottle
- Aerosol sunscreen or any aerosol can
- Umbrella
- GoPro, professional camera, or any camera with a removable lens
- Chains, chain wallets, or anything with spikes
- Colors or patches
Pack for the full day on the first entry. There's no coming back in once you leave. Sunscreen, your charger, a poncho, your water bottle, anything you might want at 9PM needs to be on you when you walk through the gate in the morning. That no re-entry rule is the main thing that changes how you pack compared with most other festivals.
From the Community
The following section reflects tips from experienced Louder Than Life attendees. It is Tier 3 content. Verify any specific claims directly with the festival before your trip.
Bring shoes you are willing to throw away
Multiple repeat attendees are emphatic about this. Mud and rain across four days destroys footwear. Veterans recommend bringing one pair of shoes you do not care about for the festival grounds and keeping a dry backup pair at your hotel or campsite. More than one person has reported throwing out shoes at the end of the weekend.
Bring your own toilet paper
Porta-potties inside the festival and at the campgrounds run out of toilet paper, particularly later in the day and by the final days of the weekend. A small roll of TP and a travel-size hand sanitizer is consistently listed as one of the highest value additions to a Louder Than Life pack list.
Bring a spare bottle cap
Vendors inside the festival remove caps from bottles you purchase at the bar. If you buy a water or drink and want to carry it without spilling, you will not have a cap. Experienced attendees bring a spare bottle cap from home specifically for this.
Lock your bag or wear it in front
Pickpocketing and bag theft has been reported at Louder Than Life including items taken from bags while they were being worn. Wear your fanny pack in front of your body, and if you are using a backpack put a small lock on the zipper. Keep valuables on your person rather than in a bag if possible.
Stand behind or to the side of the sound booth for big sets
If you do not want to be in the thick of crowd surfing and pushing near the front of major stages, positioning yourself just behind or to the side of the sound booth gives you a clear sightline to the stage while avoiding the densest part of the crowd. Experienced attendees say this is one of the best spots in the field for a comfortable experience at a big headliner set.
Set a meet-up spot before you go in
Cell service inside the festival can be unreliable with tens of thousands of people on the grounds. Agree on a specific physical meet-up location with your group before you enter each day. A landmark near a gate or at a named stage works better than trying to share a live location when messages are delayed.
