Bag policy reminder: Fanny packs and clutches 6x9 inches or smaller do not need to be clear. All other bags must be clear and smaller than 12x6x12 inches. Hydration packs are allowed but must be empty on entry. Traveling without a bag gets you through security fastest. Source: lollapalooza.com.
The Essentials
These are non-negotiable for a full day at Grant Park in late July.
- Comfortable broken-in shoes: The most important item on this list. You will walk close to a mile inside the park on every single day across four days. Shoes that hurt by noon will ruin your festival. Wear what you have already broken in, not something new.
- Empty reusable water bottle or hydration pack: Refill stations are available inside the venue. You cannot bring in outside beverages but you can bring an empty bottle and fill it for free. Stay ahead of dehydration in the July heat. Hydration packs are allowed and do not need to be clear but must be completely empty on entry.
- Non-aerosol sunscreen, 3.4 oz or smaller: Grant Park is open and exposed. Reapply throughout the day. Aerosol sunscreen is prohibited. Bring the bottle kind in travel size.
- Compact poncho: Chicago weather in late July is unpredictable. Storms can move in off Lake Michigan fast with very little warning. The festival runs rain or shine. A poncho that packs small enough to fit in your fanny pack is the right call. You may not need it but you will want it if the sky opens up during a headliner.
- Portable battery pack: A full day of the Lolla app, GPS, group texting, and photos will drain your phone faster than a normal day. Portable battery packs are explicitly allowed per the official policy. Bring one.
- ID: Required for alcohol purchases on site. Required for age verification if you have children with you under the Platinum Kids policy.
Bag Strategy
The bag you choose determines how smooth your entry is every day. There are two practical approaches.
Option 1 — Small fanny pack only: A fanny pack 6x9 inches or smaller does not need to be clear and can have one pocket. This is the fastest option through security. Fits your phone, ID, card, sunscreen, earplugs, and a folded poncho. Everything else stays at the hotel.
Option 2 — Clear bag: If you need more than a fanny pack can hold, go with a clear bag smaller than 12x6x12 inches. This still goes through security inspection but allows you to carry more. A clear drawstring bag or clear crossbody are common choices.
Reserve a locker. If you want to bring a bag each day but hate waiting in the bag security line every time you re-enter, renting a locker and leaving it overnight is a strategy experienced attendees recommend. Check the official Lollapalooza site for locker availability and pricing for 2026.
Weather and Comfort
- Hat or cap: Direct sun protection across a full day in an open park. A wide brim hat works better than a cap for full coverage.
- Sunglasses: The July sun off the lake is bright and relentless.
- Light layer for the evening: Chicago evenings near the lake can cool down noticeably even in peak summer. A light hoodie or long sleeve that packs into your bag gives you options after dark without being heavy during the day.
- Personal misting fan: Allowed per the official policy with a bottle no larger than 1.5L that must be empty on entry. One of the most appreciated items during a hot afternoon set. Fill it once you are inside.
- Electrolyte packets: Factory sealed single serving packages are explicitly allowed. Take them with your first water of the day and again in the afternoon. Heat and dancing deplete electrolytes faster than most people expect.
Sound and Safety
- High-fidelity earplugs: Four days of loud music adds up. High-fidelity earplugs reduce volume without muffling the sound the way foam earplugs do. Bring a backup pair in case one gets lost.
- Factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kit: Explicitly allowed per the official policy. A practical harm reduction item at any large festival.
- Personal hand sanitizer, 3.4 oz or smaller: Allowed per the official policy.
Navigation and Communication
- Lollapalooza app: Downloaded, set up, and your schedule built before you leave the hotel each morning. Cell service inside a packed Grant Park can be unreliable during peak hours. Having your schedule cached in the app means you are not dependent on a live connection to know where you need to be.
- Designate meetup spots before you go in: The Ferris wheel, Perry's arch, and large art installations are commonly used landmarks. Set two or three with your group before you enter each day in case phones die or signals drop.
- Cash: Some vendors prefer it. ATMs on site typically charge fees. A small amount of cash as a backup is useful.
