No open flame cooking. Cooking with any type of flame is prohibited at Dancefestopia. All food prep must be flame-free. Plan around a cooler, no-cook meals, and snacks. Source: dancefestopia.com camping essentials.
Camp Setup Essentials
- Sturdy wagon or pull cart: The single most important logistical item. The walk from parking to the camping area includes significant hills. A flimsy cart will not survive it. Invest in a heavy-duty one before you leave home.
- Tent: A two-person tent rental is available for $64.97 plus fees if you need one on-site. Otherwise bring your own. Make sure it can handle wind and potential rain.
- Shade structure or canopy: Essential even in the forest where significant sun still comes through the canopy. Absolutely critical for field camping with no natural shade. Non-negotiable at a Kansas September festival.
- Shade cloth or tapestries: For the sides of your canopy to block the angle of the sun as it moves throughout the day.
- Heavy-duty stakes and a mallet: Kansas can be windy. Standard stakes will not hold a canopy in a strong gust. Screw-in ground anchors are even better.
- Tarp: Under your tent to protect the floor and keep moisture out.
- Air mattress and pump: Sleeping on the ground across seven nights is hard on your body. An air mattress makes a real difference.
- Sleeping bag rated for cool nights: Nights can drop significantly even after 100-degree days. A bag rated to at least 50 degrees is recommended.
- Hammock: For daytime rest in the forest. Note that hammocks are not allowed inside the venue in certain areas per the Living Room Policy.
- Zero gravity or camp chairs: For your campsite. Note that folding chairs are not allowed inside the venue past certain areas.
- Rug or floor mat: Under your canopy to complete your camp setup and keep dust down.
Bug and Sun Protection
This section is more critical at Dancefestopia than at almost any other festival. Kansas ticks, chiggers, and spiders are a genuine concern that experienced attendees warn about every year. Source: r/Dancefestopia community.
- High-DEET bug spray: Apply before walking through any grass or brush. Reapply throughout the day. This is not optional at Wildwood in September.
- Light-colored long socks and pants for camp: Ticks and chiggers attach at the ankle and lower leg. Tucking pants into socks and wearing light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot bugs before they attach.
- Permethrin spray for clothing and gear: Treat your tent, shoes, and camp clothing before you go for added tick protection.
- Sunscreen, high SPF: Reapply throughout the day, especially in the open areas near the stages.
- Wide brim hat and sun shirt: Physical sun protection for long hours in exposed areas.
- Sunglasses: For daytime sets and camp hours in the sun.
Dust and Air
- Dust mask or bandana: The dust near the stages is heavy and persistent. Multiple veterans specifically list this as one of the most overlooked items first-timers forget. Source: r/Dancefestopia community.
- Saline nasal spray: For dust irritation across multiple days.
Heat and Hydration
- Battery-powered fans: Multiple fans with fully charged power banks. Daytime tent temperatures in Kansas September heat are brutal without airflow. This is a survival item not a comfort item.
- Extra water jugs: Free water stations are available on site. Bring large containers to fill and keep at camp so you are never without water between trips to a fill station.
- Electrolytes: Kansas heat combined with dancing and multiple late nights depletes electrolytes faster than most people expect. Take them on a schedule, morning and afternoon, not just when you feel bad.
- Hydration pack or Camelbak: Empty reusable water bottles and empty Camelbaks are allowed in the venue. Bring one for inside the festival.
- Cooler: For food and drinks at camp. Coolers are not allowed inside the venue.
Weather Preparedness
- Rain gear and poncho: Kansas severe weather including thunderstorms is possible in September. The festival runs rain or shine. Bring waterproof layers and a poncho that packs small.
- Warm layers for night: Temperatures can drop significantly after dark even following 100-degree days. A hoodie or jacket is needed every night.
- Waterproof bags or dry sacks: To protect electronics and sleeping gear if rain hits.
Lighting and Power
- Headlamp: Essential and hands-free for nighttime camp navigation. The forest is genuinely dark.
- Lantern: For your campsite at night.
- Multiple portable power banks: There is no electricity at tent campsites. Bring several fully charged units. Solar panels are highly effective in Kansas September sun and worth bringing if you are running fans or other devices.
- Solar panel charger: Recharges your banks during the day while you are at camp or the venue.
- Light-up flag or solar string lights: For finding your campsite in the dark after a long night. The forest and field look completely different at night and a visible landmark at your site is genuinely useful.
Food and Camp Kitchen
- No-cook food: Open flame cooking is prohibited. All food must be prepared without flame. Cold cuts, cheese, fruit, nuts, protein bars, pre-made sandwiches, and snacks that do not require heat are the standard approach.
- Airtight food containers: Cooler melt water ruins food. Store everything in airtight containers.
- Ice and cooler management plan: You will need ice replenishment across multiple days. Know where to get it near La Cygne or plan to stock up in Kansas City before arriving.
- Camp plates, cups, and utensils: Reusable and lightweight.
- Extra trash bags: Camp hygiene across seven days requires ongoing effort.
Venue Essentials
- Empty reusable water bottle or Camelbak: Allowed in the venue when empty. Fill at free water stations inside.
- High-fidelity earplugs: Four to seven days of loud bass music. Protect your hearing. Bring a backup pair.
- Small bag 12x12 inches or smaller: The venue prohibits large purses or bags exceeding 12x12 inches. Keep your venue carry small.
- Portable battery pack: For charging your phone during long venue hours.
- Cash: Parking is $60 cash only. Some vendors on site prefer cash.
- ID: Required for entry and alcohol purchases.
Hygiene and Comfort
- Wet wipes: Multiple packs. Essential for multi-day camping when shower access is limited or lines are long.
- Shower shoes: For the shower facilities on site.
- Towel: Quick-dry travel towels are more practical than standard towels across multiple days.
- Extra socks: More than you think you need. Sweaty Kansas September days go through socks fast.
- Zip lock bags: Pre-pack each day's outfit, protect gear from dust, and keep things organized across multiple days.
- Tick removal tool: A fine-tipped tweezer or dedicated tick remover for daily checks.
