How Camping Works at Dancefestopia

Camping at Dancefestopia is on-site at Wildwood Outdoor Education Center in the forest and surrounding fields. It is described by Dancefestopia as a true forest camping experience. There are no marked or assigned campsites. You find your spot, set up, and are asked to be mindful of the space you use relative to your neighbors.

The campground is divided into forest areas and open field areas. The forest gives shade but is farther from parking. The field is closer to parking but has no natural shade. The forest fills first because shade is the most valuable resource at a Kansas festival in early September when daytime temperatures can approach 100 degrees.

A wagon or pull cart is essential. The path from parking to the camping area involves significant terrain including the climb veterans call Buzzkill Hill. Plan for multiple trips if you have a lot of gear or invest in a large capacity wagon that handles the load in fewer runs.

No open flame cooking. Cooking with any type of flame is prohibited at Dancefestopia. Plan all your food around no-cook options, a cooler, or pre-cooked meals you reheat without flame. Source: dancefestopia.com camping essentials.

Forest vs Field Camping

Forest Camping

The forest provides natural shade which is the most valuable resource at a Kansas festival in September heat. Forest spots fill fastest and require more hauling from parking due to the distance and terrain. If you are tent camping and want to be in the forest, arrive early in the week. A four night or longer camping pass is strongly recommended.

Even in the forest, significant sun gets through the canopy during peak afternoon hours. A canopy or shade structure over your campsite is recommended even if you choose a forested spot.

Field Camping

Field camping is closer to the parking area and easier to haul gear to but offers no natural shade. If you camp in the field, a shade structure is not optional, it is a survival item. Fans and extra water are more critical here than in the forest. Some experienced groups camp in the field for proximity and set up a separate day spot in the forest for afternoon hammock time and shade.

Car Camping

Car camping reserves a space for your vehicle directly at your campsite. Spaces are 20 feet wide with a maximum length of 26 feet. One car per space. Each person in the car requires their own separate admission pass and camping pass with the same night count since your arrival date is determined by your camping pass. Car camping spaces are first come first served and placement is at the discretion of parking staff based on arrival time. Parking is included with the car camping pass.

RV Camping

RV camping reserves a space for any RV, bus, or towable trailer. Spaces are 20 feet wide with a maximum length of 50 feet. One RV per space. RV spaces are primitive with no power, water, or sewage hookups. Bring a generator if you need electricity. Each person in the RV requires their own separate admission and camping pass with matching night counts. RV spaces are first come first served. Parking is included with the RV camping pass.
